Learn more about migrating IBM DB2 to SQL Server
Why migrate?
Compared to IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server provides better security, developer productivity, manageability, and also delivers on its promise to lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Microsoft SQL Server provides out-of-the-box support for transparent data encryption, master data management, and self-service business intelligence. On the other hand, all these features are all expensive add-ons from IBM.
ABCloudz can provide you with a turnkey migration solution to Microsoft SQL Server.
Typical challenges that we see
Database migration is a daunting task with a lot of hidden issues and possible problems. With our extensive experience, we can overcome database migration challenges that you could face when you start to migrate IBM DB2 to SQL Server.
First of all, your IBM DB2 source code may include specific queries, which you need to replace with T-SQL equivalents. The ABCloudz team knows how to automate this conversion in order to make both database and application code compatible with SQL Server.
Also, before starting the migration, you should have a good understanding of your database workload including any key performance metrics and frequency of peak loads. The key to a proper comparison is a way to replay a workload. For example, you can do this through the SQL Server Distributed Replay feature or your own load harness.
Once under load, you can evaluate your new technology by monitoring pressure on CPU, Memory, IO Operations, and network traffic. By monitoring when the system is under pressure, the ABCloudz team can help determine if your technology is properly sized or if resources need to be adjusted.
ABCloudz can help you profile your existing environment and then grade your migration against that profile. Even if you choose to move your IBM DB2 workloads to the cloud, be sure to rely on our experienced team.
Getting started
Sometimes you need a helping hand to get you started. So, here are some of our offers to help with assessments, using SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA), developing a future-state roadmap, or modernizing your data-consuming applications.
Improve application performance with a move from DB2 to SQL Server
One of our customers supported a DB2-based reporting application. Their system included Java based web app and Informatica data management solution connected to DB2 databases. So, to provide a web interface for reporting needs they deployed a WebSphere server for hosting their Java application. With this interface, a small circle of users could create reports using data imported via Informatica.
Our customer wanted to reduce the maintenance costs and increase functionality. So, we came up with a solution to migrate IBM DB2 to SQL Server databases. Then we reconnected the application to the new database.
