Amazon RDS deployment challenges

In our day-to-day projects with customers moving their database workloads to AWS, these are the types of challenges we’ve seen working with Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL.

Choosing the right size of the cloud instance

How do you know what size of EC2, RDS, and Aurora instances to use without overprovisioning?

With our in-house tools, we monitor your on-premises database performance over a period of time along with server information in order to then come up with recommendations for instance sizing across various services. These SQL scripts can also make recommendations for combining multiple databases on a single instance to reduce licensing costs for the service if it makes sense.

Selecting the right type of AWS cloud instance

How can you determine whether you should be looking at RDS versus Aurora vs deploying on EC2?

Our solution architects and DBAs can help you understand your requirements for high availability, performance needs, operational requirements, service monitoring, database capabilities, and other aspects of running databases on EC2, RDS, and Aurora. The benefits of managed RDS databases look attractive for reducing the time needed for our DBAs to conduct standard operations tasks.

Featured services for Amazon RDS

We provide a comprehensive set of features to help you get the most out of Amazon RDS:

  • Moving on-premises databases to the same platform
  • Migrating databases from one platform to another
  • Developing cost estimation models for RDS deployments
  • Creating high availability failover solutions across regions

Here are some examples of the services that we provide for running online transaction processing workloads on the different Amazon database services.

Get the most out of Amazon Web Services

At ABCloudz, we help our customers set up, operate, and support your OLTP workloads in the Amazon cloud and ensure that your I/O-intensive workloads will always have sufficient level of IOPS performance.

ABCloudz was an early adopter of AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) and has performed more migrations using the tool than anyone else. Our team knows how to work around the shortcomings of AWS SCT.

We have an extensive internal knowledgebase to help convert code that AWS SCT doesn’t understand to the target Amazon cloud platform of your choice.

We can migrate your data to and from the most widely used commercial and open-source databases to AWS quickly and securely, ensuring minimal downtime, high availability, and scalability.

In addition, our application developers are experts in .NET, Java, JavaScript and other programming frameworks and languages to help you with modifying applications that connect to your database, so that they will work great against Amazon RDS services.

Lift and shift your databases to Amazon RDS and Aurora

While AWS provides tools like Database Migration Service (DMS) for moving databases from your data center to RDS, there are many other considerations to address that are outside the scope of the DMS tool.

The ABCloudz team has vast experience with AWS Database Migration Service and AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT). We know the ins and outs of getting your databases up and running on Amazon RDS and Aurora.

Here are some of the featured scenarios that we have supported in the past with our customers.

Modernizing your database platform with Aurora

Amazon Aurora is a MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible relational database built for the cloud, combining the performance and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases.

Aurora is up to five times faster than standard MySQL databases and three times faster than standard PostgreSQL databases. It provides the security, availability, and reliability of commercial-grade databases at 1/10th the cost. Aurora is fully managed by Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), which automates time-consuming administration tasks like hardware provisioning, database setup, patching, and backups.

Aurora features a distributed, fault-tolerant, self-healing storage system that auto-scales up to 64TB per database instance. Aurora delivers high performance and availability with up to 15 low-latency read replicas, point-in-time recovery, continuous backup to Amazon S3, and replication across three Availability Zones.

Here are the services that we offer for database freedom from SQL Server and Oracle databases by migrating them to either MySQL or PostgreSQL on Amazon Aurora.
